I believe she tried to felt a bag and her washer broke - I can relate. I have had a couple of repairs to mine and I know they are from felting. She sent so much I had to take 2 pictures! First is the beautiful handpainted yarn. One skein from Heritage Handpaint and the pink one is from Spunkey Eclectric. The pattern is from Lucy Neatby and is a colorwork pattern called Fiesta Feet.
Included in the package was handmade soap, cute pink office supplies (also great for knitting) - a calculator, needle box with makers and a index card box. I love the Clover "antique" repro stitch markers! Also included was a candle and lemongrass sachet tiles (they went right in my drawer the smelled so good!) There was also pink roving.
And the best thing? The very cute sheep bag!

Thank you so much DeeAnn - I love it!
This had to be the best smelling package I have received!

The second package was a long aticipated surprise from Chrissie, my dye-o-rama pal in Singapore.
The package was really on a slow boat - it was mailed in June!
My yarn has been to more places than I have!
It is hard to tell from the photo, but this yarn is so cool. It is actually lace weight yarn dyed with Wilton dyes and plyed together. How cool is that! It should stripe up like Noro and the colors are just as vibrant. I just can't wait to see what this looks like knit up. It should have a marled look and stripes as well. Thanks for all your work Chrissie. I also got a necklace I just love. It will work with so many of my suits. Some things are just worth the wait!

Thanks again to 2 great swap pals!

Time

Do you ever feel there just is not enough time? I just haven't had any free time in the last couple of weeks, so I am afraid blogging has fell to the wayside.
First I need to thank my secret pal 8 for the nice box of goodies I got last week. There was all sorts of cool and useful things. The picture doesn't show it off very well (I was in a hurry). The purple thing is actually a tool kit and for some reason I took a picture with the kitty looking the other way! Sorry for the hasty picture - but a huge belated thank you to my secret pal.

Rae and I went to the Michigan Fiber Festival today in Allegan. Long day, but always fun. Rae got the spinning wheel she has been saving up for over a year. She got a Lundrum and has been using it since we got home, so I think she likes it! I am hoping she takes pity on her mother and teaches me how to use it.
I haven't been knitting much, but I did frog the linen tank top I made 2 years ago and start over with a different pattern. The one I made first was huge! (NO gage swatch!) I almost to the arm holes and I think I will like this version. I hope to get more knitting time in and then I will have some new pictures.

Catching up on swaps...

"Ellie Alpaca" my One Skein pal sent me a skein of Malabrigo in July. It is the softest wool ever and I can't wait to knit with it. I think this yarn will be one of the hot sellers of the fall. Thanks Ellie for the skein and the chocolate too! I tried to take a picture, but Trent the cat couldn't keep away from the tissue paper so he got included. The last couple of weeks have been, well long. I am short a few employees at work and I have been working a bit extra. I am excited to have 2 whole days off.

I did finish the MSU baby blanket for my employee (none too soon - his daughter is due in 2 weeks). The darn thing is huge! No wonder it took so long!

I did start a new sock. I have been wanting (I don't know why) do try colorwork on a sock. We got a shipment of a new sock yarn from Universal Yarn. Very good price and good colors. I thought I should make up something for the store.

The pattern is from Blue Moon Fiber Arts (the Socks that Rock people). We are nearly out of their yarn and placed an order more than a month ago. They are a small company and it looks like it will be some time before out order is ready - bummer. We do have their new book of patterns on order and this sock is in the book.

Now for a little weirdness!
We have been wanting to get a couple of foot forms to display our socks at the store and to use in photographs. Rae has been writing some patterns and she decided we had to have some feet for her to take pictures for her patterns. We looked on eBay and were going to order a couple when we discovered a lot of about 20 used feet (some with calves) from a seller that looks to have a warehouse of old manikins and store displays. I just finished cleaning the feet, they are all lined up on the kitchen counter. I'll take a picture when Rae gets home with the camera, but it looks like something from a Stephen King novel. It's kinda creepy.

Magic Ball surprise

My Magic Ball arrived!!!
Here is a picture of the before.... One sock finished and one to go. They are turning out really cool. I am using the Pomatomus pattern from Knitty. Fun to knit - hard to say. I got tons of compliments from fellow knitters at TNNA. I knit on them quite a bit while standing in line waiting for book signings. Thanks again Joyce for this wonderful yarn. Now I just have to figure out how to get more...

Goodie Galore!

Thank you Secret Pal 8!!
Look what was delivered to me yesterday. Rae is finishing up her beautiful color work sock she is designing for the 6 sock knit along. I on the other hand got bitten by the “Mason Dixon” bug and I sitting here knitting a warshrag out of Peaches and Cream! Yikes, I never thought I would see the day!

Here is my KSKS questionnaire

What are your favorite colors?
I like jewel tones, but earth tones are great too. I don’t usually care for pastels.
Are you a new sock knitter? How long have you been knitting socks?
I have been knitting socks for a couple of years.
Do you prefer solid or multicolored yarn?
I like both, it depends on the pattern.
What fibers do you prefer in sock yarn?
I usually use a wool nylon blend or all wool. I also like a cotton wool blend for summer.
Where do you usually knit socks?
Everywhere! It is sensory overload without a doubt! A typical day…..out of bed by 6 AM to be at class at 8AM. Meet your group after class at 11 or so. Spend the day – until lights out at 6PM -on the huge convention floor, standing in line for book signings, talking to distributors, designers, authors, and other store owners. Then its off to a party, fashion show or just to collapse in your room. It’s crazy, cause you have no time to eat (they had bad food anyway) or sleep or (this is the worst) to knit. But it is like the best thing to do in the world!
We ordered lots of stuff for the store and got a 2 foot stack of books signed by the author. For further details see Rae’s blog.
I took some cool classes.
Zen of Spinning by Joan Sheridan Hoover from Heritage Spinning - we got a drop spindle and some fiber and learned some beginning techniques. This is my first try.

This is my handwoven scarf made on the coolest new “Knitters loom” by Ashford taught by Rowena Hart from New Zeeland (she wrote the instruction book). This was just so fun - I am addicted! We hope to have the looms in for Christmas. You can get really creative and use up all your stash. Here is the scarf I made in 3 hours!

My multi-directional knitting class was taught by Iris Schreier owner of Artyarns. This is the scarf I started in class. We each got a skein of Artyarn’s beautiful new yarn Silk Rhapsody to knit with! Wow what great yarn! Iris was kind enough to also give us a signed copy of her book “Modular Knitting”

I also took a class in Entrelac by Kathleen Power Johnson. I don’t have a picture as we didn’t get to far, but project we started was a little purse. I came home with more projects “in progess” – yikes!

Faroese Shawl

I made it! What a good idea I thought, I have more than a month.
After much knitting and much unknitting to find a mistake, I finally feel like I can see the light of day. With 2 weeks to go, I am comfident I will finish. The cool thing is that it is triangualar and gets 4 stitches smaller every other row. There was a time when it took me all evening to do like 4 rows!
I about cried to see there were almost 200 rows!
I am almost to row 90 and I can do a knit row in less than 15 minutes.
The yarn is a merino silk blend that Rae hand painted. Very light weight and soft.

Our sock yarn came Friday, so we will be dying our dye o rama yarn. I had pretty low expectations, it was my only day off that week and I had the usual cleaning and laundry to do. I really just wanted to be able to sit down and knit and maybe watch a movie for a couple of hours. The kids surprised me with flowers and a gift.

The present turned out to be someting I really wanted, but was not anywhere near ready to buy for myself. I got speakers for my ipod! ( See Rae's blog for the full story) Yea! I have such wonderful kids.

On the knitting front...
I started a lace shaw last week out of hand dyed alpaca (I think it is a blend, but don't remember what else, maybe silk?)
I have not knit lace out of lace weight yarn and funny thing, you have to pay attention to what you are knitting! Definatly not a movie project. I wanted to take a picture, but the camera is with Rae, so I will take a pic later this week. It is slow going, but since it is a triangle and I started at the widest part, I am about 1/3 done. It doesn't feel like it since I am not even 40 rows out of 200!! I need to have it done by TNNA - June 9. I think I can.....

Dye-o-meme-arama

Meme - maybe more than anyone wants to know!

Your favorite colors?
#1 is Red, I like color - interesting combinations. Thanks to Joyce from Toronto, I now own a pair of socks that fit perfectly! They are in beautiful shades of green and blue. They remind me of a forest. I absolutly LOVE them! And Joyce also send me a skein of Fleece Artist sock yarn in vibrant jewel tones. I can't wait to start knitting it! I just have a few more rows to knit on the toe of my 6 sock knitalong socks, so I can start as soon as I find the perfect pattern.

Secret Pal 8 questionnaire

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I like natural fibers rather than acrylics. But a little manmade fiber in the mix can be good. I an not a big fan of cotton usually, but I am trying to like it better! I really love the soft stuff (who doesn't?) like alpaca.
2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
We have vases all over the place with needles in them. I have a metal tin that also has double points. I have never found the perfect storage for circulars, I use a metal cookie tin.
3. How long have you been knitting? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I learned to knit about 35 years ago, but only have come back to it in the last six years. I would say I am an intermediate knitter because there are lots of things I haven't tried yet.
4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
I don't have a wish list. Since I own a yarn store with my daughter, I have my own wish list at the store!
5. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)
I keep going back to vanilla.
6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
I love milk chocolate, the creamer the better. Adding a little carmel, pecans, peanuts or coconut never hurts either.
7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
There is really no time for other crafts, although I have tried them all. I have tried spinning and am waiting until we get a spinning wheel to really learn.
8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
I like a wide variety of music. I listen to the local student alternative station. I just (today) got tickets to my favorite band - the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was a presale, the show is in November! But I am in the 7th row center!!
9. What's your favorite color? Or--do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?
Red - not a doubt. I like color, I am even starting to like brown. I probably could live without yellow.
10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
I am single, 2 grown kids still at home. Both in college (one also runs our yarn store). We have 2 cats and fish. We want a dog, but don't think the cats could cope.
11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
In Michigan? Of course scarves and mittens. I'm not to fond of hats and have not worn a poncho since I was in middle school.
12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
Right now I have been knitting socks, but I like to knit anything. I love to learn something new.
13. What are you knitting right now?
Baby blanket, socks, entralac purse, sweater, lace shawl.
14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
Sure, as long as they aren't in the toilet paper holder cover category.
15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
I knit with what ever feels right, but I would rather knit a sock the magic loop method. I like wood or bamboo best. Not super fond of Addies (always seem to get a pair that has a catch at the join) and I do use my Denise set often.
16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
Of course, one at home and one at the store.
17. How did you learn to knit?
My Mom was my teacher and my older sisters too.
18. It is fun, but hard to work 7 days! If you are ever near Lansing Michigan, come and visit us. The shop is Rae's Yarn Boutique at 3024 Vine St in Lansing, Michigan near the Frandor shopping center.

I did manage to start some new projects - I joined the six sock knit-along (a Yahoo group). I have 1 sock finished the current pattern - Sixth Sense. I am using Step sock yarn from Austermanns.

I also started a Michigan State University green and white baby blanket for my employee. He is a big Spartan fan and his first baby is due in first part of August. I thought I better get it started, August will be here before you know it! I am pleased with it so far. I am using Merino Fine - a washable wool that is soft (and discontinued!). I am using a pattern from Simple Knits for Cherished Babies. The blanket will be Spartan green with a white border with a "S" in the center.

Finished! Just a couple of tails to tuck, blocking and volia! They will be ready to send to my pal.
Stats -
Yarn - Socks that Rock in Pebble Beach
Pattern - Tiger Eyes from Socks Socks Socks
The only change I made was the edging. Since these are toe up, the picot edging was last. The pattern called for a crochet picot. Although it looked real nice, it was so tight you couldn't get the socks over your heel (kinda important to be able to wear them). I tried a second time with the same result. My daughter suggested a knitted picot with a hem. That is what I did and it worked great!

Now here is the "almost finished"................

I had a leak in my bathroom, had to remove and discard the toilet with the hole in the finish. Cut out the icky moldy subfloor and pull up the ugly vinyl. We (my son and I) replaced the subfloor - not an easy task when you own few tools! We are now a 2 saw family! This weekend the tiling began. Once we started it went so smooth - I put down the adhesive and set the tile, Nick went behind me and made sure they were straight and the gaps were even. We borrowed a tile saw so the cuts were easy. Everything sounds great - right?

Well, surprise surprise - I can't measure!! I didn't buy enough tile!! Since we didn't figure this out until Saturday late afternoon and Sunday is Easter, the tile store will not be opened until Monday! Yikes, what a screw up! On the plus side, I like the tile and can see an end to this project. It feels like it has taken me forever!
I still am working on one other major project...my bathroom. My toilet had a defect that caused it to leak (very small, but over time a mess). We have so far removed the toilet and the vinyl floor. We (my son and I) had to remove the subfloor aound the toilet and replace it. We had to put new cement board down. This is where we are at, next we have to get the floor cleaned and prepped for the tile. No wonder I don't have much time for knitting!

I did finish a project. It is Cat Bordhi's felted Denise needle bag. The patterns are free on her website. Mine turned out with a poochie bottom pocket quite by accident, but I like it. I used 3 different types of yarn that all felted at
different rates. I was in a hurry and ran out of pink Peace Fleece, so I used Paton's Merino and some Lopi for the pocket lining. Paton's felts fast and Peace Fleece felt slow - so I got a cool front pocket.
Just started...a petal washcloth from Weekend Knitting out of Crystal Palace Cotton Chenille. The coolest part is that it has Aloe Vera and JoJohoba Oil in the yarn! I think it will fit the pattern and I want to try it soon.

SockapalOOOza!

As promised a picture of my first SockapalOOOza sock. I love Brenda Dayne,
I think I will join the new One Skein Secret Pal, it sounds so fun!

I will have a picture of my SockapalOOOza sock tomorrow. Rae took it to the shop
and I didn't think about taking a pic first!
I want to email my sock sister Ashley with my blog address so she doesn't think I quit. (I actually have one sock done. YEA!)

That's all for now......
